Outcomes Overview

Outcomes are the heart of Joyous. Instead of starting with a list of tasks and hoping they add up to something meaningful, you start with the result you want to achieve — a clear goal with measurable success signals — and work backward from there.

What is an outcome?

An outcome represents a goal your team is working toward. It's not a task to check off — it's a result to deliver. Every outcome includes:

• Goal — What you want to achieve, stated clearly. "Launch the redesigned pricing page by end of Q2."
• Context — Background information that helps the team and AI understand the situation.
• Directives — Constraints and guidance, like "Must pass WCAG 2.1 AA compliance."
• Success signals — Measurable criteria that define what done looks like.
• Status — Where the outcome sits in its lifecycle: Backlog, Committed, Blocked, Done, or Archived.

Why outcomes matter

Traditional project management starts with tasks. You create tickets, assign them, and measure progress by how many get closed. But completing 100% of your tickets doesn't guarantee you achieved anything meaningful.

Outcomes flip this model. You define the result first, then break it into work cards that directly contribute to that result. Every card traces back to a goal. Progress is measured by card completion, and health is reported by the people closest to the work.

Each outcome has a properties sidebar with key metadata:

• Team — Which team owns this outcome
• Producer — The person accountable for delivery
• Status — Current lifecycle stage
• Target dates — Start and end dates for planning
• Priority — Relative importance
• Work cards — The tasks that roll up into this outcome's progress
