Updates & Progress
Track progress through card completion and status updates.
Joyous gives you two layers of progress tracking for every outcome: automated progress from work card completion and human-written status updates with threaded discussions. Together, they keep stakeholders informed without requiring you to maintain a separate status report.
Automated progress tracking
Every outcome's progress percentage is driven by its work cards. As cards move to Done, the progress bar on the outcome fills automatically.
For example, if an outcome has 10 work cards and 4 are done, the outcome shows 40% progress. This appears on:
- The outcome's detail page header
- Team view outcome cards with a progress bar
- Parent outcomes that roll up child progress
No manual updates needed — just move cards through their statuses and progress takes care of itself.
Progress percentage counts cards with Done status against total cards. Cards in Archived status are excluded from the calculation so they don't skew your numbers.
Status updates
While automated progress shows what's done, status updates show how things are going. The Updates tab on every outcome provides a threaded discussion feed for posting updates, asking questions, and making decisions.
Posting an update
The update form sits at the top of the Updates tab, always visible and ready to use:
- Write your update in the rich text editor — format with bold, italic, code blocks, and lists
- Type @ to mention team members who should be notified
- Click Post Update to publish
Updates appear instantly in the feed thanks to real-time subscriptions. Anyone viewing the outcome sees new updates appear without refreshing.
Threaded replies
Every update supports threaded replies for focused discussions.
- Click Reply on any update to open an inline reply editor
- Replies appear nested under the parent update
- Thread authors can click Resolve to mark a discussion as complete
- Resolved threads collapse by default, showing a "N replies" toggle to expand them
This keeps discussions organized — a question about a blocker stays attached to the update that raised it, rather than getting lost in a flat comment stream.
Use Resolve to clean up your Updates tab. Resolved threads collapse automatically, keeping the feed focused on active discussions while preserving the full history.
Real-time updates
The update feed uses Supabase Realtime to deliver changes instantly:
- New updates from teammates appear in real time
- Edits and deletions sync across all viewers
- Reply threads update live as colleagues respond
You never need to refresh the page to see the latest status.
Activity feed
Beyond the Updates tab, each outcome also has an Activity tab that logs all changes — status transitions, property edits, card additions, and more. This provides a comprehensive audit trail of everything that happened on the outcome, with timestamps and actor names.
